Okoa Refuge is a Christian nonprofit serving vulnerable children, families, and communities in East Africa. In partnership with the local church, Okoa exists to glorify Christ through stabilizing the family unit and transforming entire communities.
Our ministries include care for vulnerable children and people with disabilities, support for survivors of violence, healthcare, pastoral training, church planting, and community outreach. We prioritize local leadership and work alongside communities to develop lasting solutions that strengthen families and restore hope.
Our U.S. team supports this work by building relationships with donors and church partners, sharing stories of impact, and mobilizing resources to advance the mission.
Okoa Refuge was founded in 2008 by Tyler and Liv Workman with a vision to care for vulnerable children in Uganda. What began as a home for children has grown into a multifaceted ministry responding to the needs of families and communities.
As those relationships deepened, Okoa expanded its work beyond residential care to address the challenges that place children and families at risk. Working alongside local churches and leaders, the ministry developed programs supporting family stability, healthcare, disability care, protection for survivors of violence, and gospel outreach.
Throughout this growth, Okoa has remained rooted in its original calling: to glorify Christ, protect the vulnerable, and equip local communities to thrive.
